Veneers vs. Crowns —
the decisive difference

Veneers are wafer-thin ceramic or composite shells bonded to the front of the tooth. With minimal loss of substance they achieve a maximally aesthetic result — and they are not the same as a crown. We explain when each solution is the right one.

What are veneers?

Veneers are 0.3 to 0.7 mm thin shells of ceramic or composite bonded to the front of the teeth. They correct colour, shape, size and alignment — especially in the visible front-tooth area. Unlike a crown, the natural tooth is largely preserved.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers best mimic the light transmission of real teeth. They do not stain, are wear-resistant and last 15 to 20 years with good care. For demanding front-tooth aesthetics they are the most prestigious choice.

Composite veneers & Lumineers

Composite veneers are the more economical option and can often be applied in a single session. Their durability is 5 to 7 years. Lumineers are ultra-thin veneers that require almost no grinding of the tooth — ideal when tooth structure is to be maximally preserved.

Veneer or crown — what is the difference?

A veneer covers only the front of the tooth and suits aesthetic corrections on largely intact teeth. A crown encloses the entire tooth and is the right choice when the tooth is heavily damaged, root-treated or extensively destroyed. For larger restorations we recommend metal-free zirconia crowns.

Aftercare

  • Thorough but gentle oral hygiene twice a day
  • Regular professional cleaning
  • Avoid biting very hard foods with the front teeth
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and is therefore painless. Mild sensitivity afterwards usually subsides within a few days.
